Living a right livelihood

Its God awful

In 1978 when I began making pottery as a high school junior there was no internet, no social media, and no ego.  I was immediately drawn to ceramics because there was no correct answer, all other classes were based on the correct answer.   in Art class, grades were based on work ethic and creativity.  Two personality traits I knew I had already.  The second reason, that even at a young age I loved cooking.  So being able to make my own plates, bowls, mugs and serving pieces made it a perfect fit to who I am..

I think back to then and the first 10 years of making pots, I honestly do not think I would of used the social media sites of today to constantly show the world how shitty my pots were.  I just loved creating and learning about ceramics.  I am quite annoyed by what I see on a daily basis, world wide they bastardize.

"Pottery"  has turned out to be the Chucky Cheese of craft

For all my fellow ceramic artists, if we do not have self respect how can we expect it from others?

We have allowed this lack of respect in what we do, those who have bastardized our craft.  They minimize the hard work and dedication it takes to be able to make the simplest bowl, the knowledge it takes to formulate a glaze, to even load and fire a kiln.

I will not be ashamed of who I am and the self respect I have for what I have accomplished.  I am not "fortunate", I worked for it, dedicated my life to it, had great success.    I will not allow this disrespect for my craft go unchallenged..
